Sanctions

When students are found in violation of University regulations, sanctions will be imposed. The purpose of sanctioning is to educate a student as to why their behavior is inappropriate. Sanctions for misconduct will be determined on a case to case basis, utilizing three main criteria: a) the nature of the offense; b) the precedent established at the University for similar offenses, and; c) the previous disciplinary history of the student, as well as the student's attitude and behavior throughout the resolution process.

Sanctions shall be comprised of two components: a) an "inactive sanction" or written sanction (Censure, Disciplinary Probation, Restrictive Disciplinary Probation, Disciplinary Suspension, or Disciplinary Dismissal), as well as; b) an "active sanction" or educational sanctions, requiring the student's active participation.

Please Note:

More than one sanction may be imposed for any violation.
Student Conduct and Community Responsibilities may impose other restrictions, such as restriction from class registration and other academic activities as is deemed necessary.
In cases where it is determined that a student has been involved in the sale and/or distribution of illegal or controlled drugs or substances, it is strongly recommended that the minimum sanction imposed be Disciplinary Suspension for at least one calendar year.
In cases where it is determined that a student has been involved with the possession and/or use of illegal or controlled drugs or substances, it is strongly recommended that the minimum sanction imposed be Disciplinary Probation for at least one calendar year.
A disciplinary body may recommend removal from or relocation within University residence halls. Final determination is the responsibility of University Housing Services.
There are recommended minimum sanctions for alcohol and drug policy violations (see below).
Official agencies or organizations of the University such as but not limited to Milner Library, University Housing Services, Campus Dining Services, and Parking Services may establish, assess, and collect fines independent of any disciplinary action.

Sanctions for Alcohol and Other Drug Incidents

In cases where students are found in violation of University policies related to alcohol and/or drugs, a set of minimum sanctions has been established. Case managers are expected to apply these sanctions, noting that aggravating factors may be present that may result in increased sanctions.
